Giovanna Gatto – Biography

Giovanna graduated in Piacenza with Maria Grazia Petrali and she obtained a Postgraduate degree at the Conservatory “G.Verdi” in Como with Roberto Stefanoni. She attended post graduate courses in “S. Cecilia” Academy in Bergamo with Konstantin Bogino, Svetlana Bogino, Vladimir Ogarkov.

She obtained the Master Performance and Master in Music Pedagogy with Patricia Pagny at the Berne University of the Arts (CH), where she also studied cembalo with Dirk Börner, organ with Benjamin Righetti and fortepiano with Edoardo Torbianelli. Always interested in the deepening of the piano solo repertoire, she has attended courses taught by the musicians Pier Narciso Masi, Andrea Turini, Aquiles Delle Vigne, Jeffrey Swann, Alexander Lonquich, Konstantin Scherbakov, Rodion Shchedrin.

She collaborated with conductors such as Simone Ori, Massimo Merone, Riccardo Bovino, Christopher Warren-Green, playing in the Kultur Casino Berne. Giovanna performed as the soloist in L.V. Beethoven Third Piano Concerto, W.A. Mozart Piano Concerto K449 and K466, J.S. Bach Concerto in D minor.

For her growth as chamber musician in different ensembles, were fundamental the lessons and the courses held by Robert Levin, Teodoro Anzellotti, Patrick Jüdt, Conradin Brotbek, Ernesto Molinari, David Eggert, Thomas Riebl, Benjamin Schmidt, Peter Bruns, Corinna Belcea.

Giovanna has collaborated with numerous organizations and Festivals in Italy and all through Europe, both as soloist and in chamber ensembles from duo to quintet, playing in prestigious concert halls in Italy, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Netherlands, Switzerland…

Winner of numerous prizes in national and international competitions, both as soloist and in chamber music ensembles, Giovanna obtained a sponsorship by the Inner Wheel-Rotary Club.

Thanks to her studies and researches on Ottorino Respighi’s piano music she got the sponsorship from the Swiss Foundation “Iréne Dénéréaz” from Lausanne (CH). This project gave her the opportunity to collaborate with the musicologist Potito Pedarra, who has a personal Archive of Respighi’s documents and who is responsible for the cataloguing and description of all the known manuscripts by Respighi. The result of this work “Ottorino Respighi: Complete Piano Music” is now published by the label Toccata Classics (UK).

Always curious about new compositions and new repertoire, Giovanna has performed in several World Premieres, both as soloist and in chamber ensembles, recording music by Ravel, Debussy, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Akaishi, Prokofiev for the Labels “Acustica Records”(DE) and “Tasti’Era Projects” (FR). Recently she played First Performances written by Luca Antignani at the LXXXI Festival of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, together with GAMO Ensemble.

Thanks to her interest on new projects and new ways of performing music, she played in ensemble electronic reworks of classical masterpieces conceived by Vito Gatto, who’s Claire de Lune rework by Debussy has been published by Decca Records Classics in 2017.

Giovanna is also interested in researching and developing the new compositions and transcriptions for accordion and piano, performing in world premieres and collaborating with new composers such as Carlo Galante.

She was awarded a Bachelor Degree in Economy for Arts, Culture and Communication at “L.Bocconi” University in Milan.
